The excitement among both teams was palpable and understandably so as it not only was the first game of the T30 season but also new team combinations and a long cricket break preceding this game. Kingsmen captain Hemant won the toss and elected to field first with still some dew around and a sluggish outfield. Sham and Mayank opened the innings and provided Starks with a brisk start in the powerplay hitting a few early boundaries. Just when both batsmen were looking to change gears they fell in quick succession thanks to some smart bowling by Hemant. Venu and Joseph then started the recovery act and kept the scoreboard ticking until Joseph was dismissed by an in-swinging Sandeep delivery that crashed into the stumps. Starks were 102/3 at the break, both teams sharing honors up to that point. After the break Venu and Monish batted with a sense of purpose until Venu was dismissed for 45 ending a well composed innings. Sherwin and Bali perished soon after in an attempt to up the ante. It was then the Monish show all the way to the end, after going past his half century he started dispatching the Kingsmen bowlers to all corners of the field. Monish combined a few lusty blows with some delightful drives to ensure that Starks ended with a formidable 232/6. Monish eventually finished on 98, 2 short of what would have been a very well deserved century. Wasif and Hemant were the pick of the bowlers for Kingsmen, the former picked 2 wickets and bowled economically with guile while the latter picked up 3 crucial scalps with deception and smart variations.

With a daunting total on the board Kingsmen were hoping for a positive start but Venu had other plans dismissing Karthik and Tufayel in his opening spell. Dangerman Wasif started well but his innings was cut short by an excellent diving catch in the deep by Monish. Once the spinners were introduced the going got even tougher for KM. Gopal who opened the innings was waging a lone battle at one end playing some sumptuous shots but he too eventually fell to the spin of Shareef for a well made 30. Spinners  Shareef and Mayank shared 5 wickets between themselves running through the middle order, well supported by Joseph and Tara’s economical spells. KM were 84/8 at the 15 over mark. Perhaps Starks were thinking of going home for an early lunch but that’s when HCCA veteran Brijesh walked to the crease and combined with Shobuj to keep the Starks bowlers at bay for almost an hour batting close to 10 overs. Brijesh showed many of the younger batsmen from both teams how to play patiently in the 30 over format. The 9th wicket 47 run stand could not win the game for Kingsmen but served as a good morale booster for them. Shobuj was the last man dismissed for 33 thus handing Starks a comprehensive 80 run win!

For his scintillating knock Monish was adjudged man of the match! A special mention to Azizi for his excellent umpiring throughout the game! Kudos to both teams for playing the game in good spirit!
