Ryerson Rams Win their 1st Canadian College Cricket National Championship

Canadian College Cricket proudly hosted its 4th Annual National Championship on August 29, 30, & 31st at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City. 12 teams participated in this year’s national championship including a few universities participating in Canadian College Cricket Nationals for the first time such as McGill University, University of Ottawa, Lakehead University, and Western University.

There were several highly entertaining and tight contests throughout the tournament as all teams were playing with full heart and dedication to accomplish their goal of lifting the trophy. Despite great performances and dedication, the top 4 teams: Ryerson University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Humber, and University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) booked their tickets to the semi finals.

The playoff matches were full of nerves and emotions as every player, fan, and team official cheered every run for the team displaying their desire to win and passion for the game. UTSC defeated UOIT by 4 runs in the first semi final in a tight contest booking their ticket to the final. Second semi final between Humber and Ryerson was a nail-biting contest with Ryerson prevailing victory by 3 wickets in the 2nd last over of the match. Ryerson won the toss and put UTSC into bat in the Final of the championship. UTSC struggled with the bat losing quick wickets and only managing a total of 78 runs. This was a shaky chase for Ryerson as they managed to chase this target down with only 4 overs remaining with the lost of 6 wickets to win their first-ever Canadian College Cricket National Championship.

Canadian College Cricket would like to recognize and congratulate a few special performances throughout the tournament. Congratulations to Anees Ahmad from Ryerson University for being awarded Most Valuable Player of the Tournament for his all-round performance in all matches. Vishal Adlakha from UOIT attained the Best Batsman award for his outstanding performance with the bat scoring 154 runs with an average of 51.33 in 3 matches. Kush Yadav from UTSC was awarded Best Bowler for his brilliant bowling performance taking 8 wickets with an economy rate of 3.66. Hamza Ahmed from McGill University ended with most wickets in the tournament with 9 wickets.

This tournament wouldn’t have been possible with the help of our sponsors and media partners. Canadian College Cricket would like to thank SportsTrends for broadcasting the matches Live on Facebook and other media platforms. Special thanks to Win Sports for sponsoring us for the 2nd year in a row. Obaid Ullah Babar and Osama Habib, 2 of our youth cricketers, were granted scholarships by ACTO technologies as a recognition of hard work and dedication towards the game and development of the organization. We would like to thank ACTO technologies for this kind gesture. Furthermore, a whole-hearted thanks to Canadian Corporate Cricket League, Toronto District Cricket Association, Turkish Airlines, Boston Pizza, and Osmow’s for their support in development of the organization and motivating youth to excel in the sport of Cricket.

Hassan Mirza, President of Canadian College Cricket, mentioned in an interview how the structure of Canadian College Cricket is progressively emerging as the organization has more than 16 Men’s teams and 4 Women’s teams, and 1000 members affiliated with the organization alongside sponsors and media partners. He would personally like to thank and recognize the support of sponsors, media partners, team officials and players for playing a significant role in the development of the organization. Lastly, Hassan would like to humbly appeal to Ontario University Athletics and Government officials to become affiliated with Canadian College Cricket and further support the growth of the organization and platform for universities and colleges to play at a National level.

Lastly, Canadian College Cricket would like to recognize the efforts of all the volunteers who put hours of work to make this 4th annual championship a reality. We thank all our well-wishers who have always supported us in spirit and always wished success for the organization. Over the course of the academic year we aim to grow the sport at the post secondary level by providing more platforms for students to participate in and organize successful programs.
