2018 was an eventful year for Cricket Costa Rica with domestic leagues, international tournaments, overseas teams touring and club’s elemental work of spreading Cricket in the country. This year too commenced with same euphoria as Lance Binns cricket league unbolted. With seven teams participating, the ninety odd players will battle out hard to put themselves on the club’s radar. The league’s inaugural was between CRACA and Corsairs scheduled on the second Sunday of January 2019. The game opened with some spirited performances from both teams. CRACA’s captain Joel Cuthito who won the toss put his team to bat. The initial challenge for CRACA was to face off Corsairs’s notable speedster Zain. Although that worked well until the sixth over both the openers fell to two successive balls from Christopher. Badri (15), bowled on fifth ball and Aslam (8) ran himself out on a poorly called second. In the eighth and ninth overs, the incoming batsmen Gopinath and Sachin fell for cheap runs. Gopinath (3) top edged a looping delivery straight to the bowler Fahad and Sachin (1) scooped a slow full toss of Nanda to the square leg fielder.
Deepak (37) and Chandrasekar (23) gave a 44-run partnership which secured the boat for CRACA. Deepak’s quick fire with 3 fours and 2 sixes ensured the much needed push and soon joined by Dhanush (15) whose handy knock helped team to get past 100. The skipper Joel (19) finished in style with 2 sixes in his 8 balls to take the team to a competitive 144. Anandraj (2)* and Santosh (0)* remained not out at the end of the innings. Fahad and Christopher bagged two wickets each at an economy of 3.5 and 4.8 respectively.
Corsairs in the second innings, with 144 to chase, did not look well oiled. They lost their first wicket in the very first over with their opener Fahad (0) presenting his leg before the wicket. Their distress continued with Debayan (7) run out by Joel and Shivam (0) run out by Sachin in matter of two balls. Christopher (0) got out of the very next from Sachin whose controversial low catch was turned down by the umpire and later given out after careful review. Although Nanda (29) was playing beautifully on the other end, the going got difficult for Corsairs with losing wickets in succession. In the eighth over came a poor shot from Nanda who tried to reverse sweep a drifting full toss from Joel. Corsair’s captain Zain (0) on whose shoulders the responsibility of taking the team through ended up a story curtailed. Zain got out to an in-swinging delivery from Deepak. Corsairs bundled out for 58 within 11 overs with Gopinath picking up the wicket of Naveen (2) giving a simple catch in the covers. Deepak took the catch comfortably and wrapped up the short-lived chase from the opponents. CRACA joined in celebration to have won the first match of the league and now sit pretty on the top of the table with 2 points.
