Aztecs vs Reforma - The race for Lincoln Clarke Trophy begins

The Mexican cricket league 2017-18 got underway after months of anticipation on Sunday 22 October 2017 at the Reforma Athletic Club in a low scoring match between Aztecs and Reforma for the Lincoln Clarke Trophy. Reforma won the toss and invited the Aztecs to bat first. Reforma paceman Sanjay Zargar put in an outstanding, Man of the Match performance with the ball by picking up 4 wickets for 6 runs in 2.4 overs, including a hat-trick, to help bowl out the Aztecs for 66 in 15.4 overs. Zargar was aided and abetted by Captain Nithin Shetty, who took 3 wickets, and some tidying bowling from Rama Krishna, Chris Rodwell, and Daniel Buys. Wicket keeper Ben Owen showed cat-like reflexes behind the stumps to run out Vijay Verma for 6, and to take a smart catch from Zargar’s bowling to send Nirmal Kumar back to the pavilion for 2 runs and start off Sanjay’s hat-trick. Standing alone was Aztecs’ number 5 Matt Tyler who finished not out with an all run 26. The second best for Aztecs was Amit Kumar with an 18 ball 19 run effort which included a straight hit over the long off boundary.

A man on a mission, Tyler followed up his performance with willow for the Aztecs by tearing through Reforma’s top order with the ball, collecting the wickets of the top three (Sasi Reddy, Archit Asok, and Shetty) to reduce the batting side to 28 for 3 in reply. Aztecs’ Captain Aman Arora took a stunning one-handed catch at deep mid wicket off Michael Linnecar’s bowling to have Reforma wobbling at 30 for 4 to give his team hope. Ultimately, however, the Aztecs just did not have enough runs on the board to defend. There was only one further Reforma wicket to fall (Owen to Linnecar for 8 runs) before Jagdeesh Umanath (12) and Jeronimo Illich (14) took them home by 5 wickets in 13.2 overs to win the first game for the Lincoln Clarke Trophy.
