In spite of missing out on a semi-final berth at the Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, Malaysia closed out their tournament in style, beating Singapore by 60 runs. Chasing 199 for victory after Ahmad Faiz hammered 71 and was supported by Sharvin Muniandy’s career-best 60*, Singapore got off to a rapid start pummelling 81 runs inside the first nine overs of their chase without losing a wicket. Rizwan Haider, who had struggled up to that point, provided Malaysia with their first breakthrough, getting Aritra Dutta caught by Amir Azim. Rohan Rangarajan struck a pair of sixes before Khizar Hayat dragged him out of his crease and Syed Aziz whipped off the bails. Thilip Omamdurai was next to go, edging Amir Azim through to Syed Aziz to give the left-arm spinner his first of five wickets. Azim’s next two wickets would break the back of Singapore’s batting line up. Surendran Chandramohan failed to clear the straight boundary, lofting a catch to Sharvin on the ropes. Manpreet Singh found the safe hands of Virandeep to leave Singapore reeling at 124 for five. The Dutta-led unit could not recover from these five quick wickets, eventually getting bowled out in the 18th over. Earlier in the day, Malaysia won the toss and chose to bat first. In spite of Ramesh Kalimuthu snaring the big scalp of Syed Aziz in the second over of the day, Ahmad Zubaidi got his team off to a flier, smashing three fours and two sixes, including a pull shot that sailed over deep mid wicket. After Omamdurai bowled Zubaidi for 38, he and Singapore would have hoped to restrict their regional rivals to a manageable total. Yet, Ahmad Faiz had other ideas. The Malaysian captain settled into his knock before unleashing his signature sweeps, including an aerial slog that cleared to boundary. He hit six maximums in total to launch Malaysia to an imposing 198 for four. Amir Azim’s 5-16, which came on the back of his 3-18 against Nepal, earned him the Player of the Match award.
