Maldives chased down 82 against Thailand before Fitri Sham’s counter-attacking 40 helped Malaysia come from behind to defeat a spirited Bhutan line up on Day 2 of the Malaysia T20I Quadrangular Series 2022. Maldives vs Thailand After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Thailand’s openers Sorawat Desungnoen and Narawit Nuntarach were rushed by Maldives quick Hassan Ibrahim, who troubled the pair with his hard lengths. Thailand, however, would soon step on the accelerator, scoring their first boundary in 4th over when Nuntarach hit Ameel Mauroof over mid off. Maldives hit back in the final over of the powerplay as off-spinner Adam Nasif dismissed Desungnoen with an arm ball that was caught by keeper Mohamed Azzam. Nuntarach was still going strong as he struck another boundary over mid off along with whipping a boundary off his legs to race into the 20s. Sadly for Thailand, he was dismissed for 24 when he tried to clear mid off yet again only to find Ibrahim Nashath, giving Leem Shafeeg his second wicket. Chaloemwong Chatphaisan was Shafeeg’s next victim, falling in the ninth over to leave Thailand reeling at 36 for 4. Phiriyapong Suanchuai (14) was the only other batter to get into double figures for Thailand, but after he was stumped off the bowling of off spinner Ibrahim Rizan, Thailand’s chances of posting a competitive target were severely hampered. They eventually folded for 81 with three deliveries left in their allotment of 20 overs. In the second innings, left-armer Thanadon Buri dismissed both Ahmed Hassan and Adam Nasif off leg-stump full tosses that were taken by fielders in the circle. Vichanath Singh then squared up Ahmed Hassan with a delivery that took his leading edge and lobbed up to Jeerasak Pakhiaokajee who took an impressive one-handed catch diving forward. At 27 for 3 after seven overs, Thailand was in with a sniff. However, Mohamed Rishwan and Mohamed Azzam played themselves in before Rishwan hit back-to-back sixes over deep mid wicket off Singh and Khanitson Namchaikul, respectively to propel Maldives to 69 in the 14th over. From then on, the result was a mere formality as Rishwan and Azzam knocked of the 82-run target with 4.2 overs to spare. Leem Shafeeg was adjudged player-of-the-match for figures of 4 for 9 in his 2.3 overs. Brief Scores: Maldives 82/3 in 20 overs (Rishwan 38*, Thanadon Buri 2-12) beat Thailand 81 all out in 19.3 overs (Narawit Nuntarach 24, Shafeeg 3-9) by 7 wickets with 26 balls to spare Malaysia vs Bhutan Fitri Sham smashed four sixes in an undefeated 40 off 38 balls to help Malaysia recover from 51 for 8 to eventually post 112 for 9, which was enough for a 39-run victory for the hosts. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Malaysian skipper Virandeep Singh was undone by a Thinley Jamtsho delivery, which held in the wicket and lobbed up to Ngawang Thinley for a simple catch. Jamtsho would strike again in his next over, dismissing Nazril Rahman who was caught by Bhutan skipper Jigme Singye to leave Malaysia 33 for 2 after four overs. Fresh off a game-winning 96 off 43 against Bhutan on Saturday, Ahmad Zubaidi was looking dangerous as he slog swept left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshi over deep mid wicket for the first six of the day. However, Yeshey would have his revenge when Zubaidi chopped an attempted pull shot onto his stumps. Left-hander Amir Azim was next to go, driving off-spinner Ngawang Thinley straight into the hands of Namgay Thinley at backward point. The Bhutan off-spinner would snare Syed Aziz just three balls later, leaving Malaysia in a spot of bother at 42 for 5 at the end of the powerplay. Yeshi would then strike twice in the seventh over as Sharvin Muniandy chipped a catch straight to Namgay Thinley before Syahadat Ramli lobbed a return catch straight back to the left-arm spinner. When Ainool Hafizs was dismissed in the tenth over with the score on 51 for 8, Malaysia were in real trouble of suffering a sobering upset against their less-fancied opponents. However, Fitri Sham walked in at ten to launch a historic counter-attack that saw him strike the first of his four maximums over the long off boundary. Sham should have been caught at long on, but the fielder in the deep parried the catch over the ropes before Sham put a full toss away over deep mid wicket to propel Malaysia past 100. A pair of no balls and some hard running between the wickets allowed Malaysia to score ten runs off the final over and reach a total of 112 for 9. Chasing 113, Bhutan got off to a good start, reaching 31 at the end of the powerplay. Ngawang Thinley demonstrated great footwork striking three boundaries in his 25 off 27 balls. In desperate need of a wicket, Virandeep Singh turned to himself, dismissing Jigme Singye caught at first slip by Syed Aziz. Namgay Thinley then skied a catch to Syazrul Ezat off the bowling of Amir Azim to leave Bhutan 36 for 2 in the eighth over. Namgang Chojay was then dismissed for a duck by Virandeep who yet again had a Bhutan batter caught by Syed Aziz in the slips. Bhutan vice captain Thinley Jamtsho then partnered with Mikyo Dorji to build a 28-run partnership that brough Bhutan back in the game. Sadly for Bhutan, with the required rate approaching 8 runs per over, Thinley was run out by a direct hit from Amir Azim. Dorji was next to go when he skied a caught and bowled chance to Syazrul Ezat, who made no mistake to leave Bhutan 66 for 5 in the 16th over. Bhutan’s chase then petered out as they eventually folded for 73 with two balls to spare in the 20th over. Unsurprisingly, Fitri Sham was adjudged player-of-the-match for his 40* (38).
