A Syazrul Ezat hat-trick set the tone for a convincing win for Malaysia over Thailand before Bhutan clinched their first-ever T20I victory, defeating Bhutan by 6 runs in a last-ball thriller. Malaysia vs Thailand After winning the toss and batting first, Thailand lost Sorawat Desungnoen in the second over after he was bowled by a sharp inswinger from Ezat. Jeeresak Pahkiaokajee was trapped in front off the very next ball, adjudged LBW to a delivery that once again moved in sharply. Walking in at number four, Chaloemwong Chatphaisan was dismissed in near identical fashion to Pakhiaokajee, giving the elated Ezat a well-deserved hat trick. Narawit Nuntarach was next to go when he smashed Ezat straight to Virandeep Singh at short cover. Phiriyapong Suanchuai attempted to change the tempo, charging down the track and flat-batting Ezat down the ground for the only boundary of the innings. Sadly for Thailand, when he was caught by Syed Aziz at first slip off the bowling of Virandeep Singh, Thailand found themselves six wickets down with just 23 runs on the board. Off-spinner Khizar Hayat then trapped both Yodsak Saranonnakkun and Khanitson Namchaikul plumb in front to close out the Thai innings on 30 all out after 13.1 overs. Chasing 31 for victory, Malaysia lost Ahmad Zubaidi off the very first ball of the innings when he smashed Thai skipper Chanchai Pengkumta straight to Desungnoen at backward point. Virandeep Singh then chipped in with a few elegant fours before Syed Aziz smacked a six over long on and another over deep mid wicket to seal a convincing win with 16.1 overs to spare. Syazrul Ezat was adjudged player of the match for figures of 4 for 17 in his four-over quota. Brief Scores: Malaysia 34/1 in 3.5 Overs (Virandeep 18*, Syed Aziz 15*) beat Thailand 30 All Out in 13.1 overs (Syazrul Ezat 4-17, Virandeep 3-7) by 9 wickets with 97 balls to spare Bhutan vs Maldives Namgay Thinley’s 3 for 15 scripted a historic maiden T20I win for Bhutan’s men as they overcame a spirited Maldives line-up in a game that went down to the wire. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Maldives’ bowlers were put under early pressure as Namgay Thinley lifted Hassan Ibrahim over deep mid wicket for six in the very first over of the game. Off-spinner Adam Nasif then trapped Tenzin Rabgey in front before Thinley Jamtsho launched a maximum over mid on to propel Bhutan to 37 for 1 after five overs. Just as Jamtsho was looking set for a big innings, he slog swept Adam Nasif into the hands of a straight-ish mid wicket in the final over of the powerplay. Maldives would continue to pick up wickets at regular intervals. Just as it looked like Bhutan were fighting their way back into the contest, Maldives skipper Yoosuf Azyan picked up the wickets of Namgang Chojay and Suprit Pradhan, who were stumped and adjudged LBW, respectively to leave Bhutan reeling at 80 for 7 in the 15th over. Luckily for Bhutan, some useful runs from Gakul Kumar Ghalley (17) and Ngawang Thinley (11) propelled them to 110 for 9 at the end of their 20 overs. In reply, Maldives opener Adam Nasif launched Suprit Pradhan over long on for six in the very first over of the chase before Ahmed Hassan nicked Jamtsho to Bhutan captain Jigme Singye at first slip in the next over. Pradhan would then dismiss Nasif caught by a diving Mikyo Dorji at mid off. Batting at number four, Mohamed Rishwan looked to be taking the game away from Bhutan with a flurry of boundaries before he was caught by Ngawang Thinley off the bowling of Namgay Thinley. Hassan Rasheed and Mohamed Azzam were Ngawang Thinley’s next two victims as the left-arm spinner helped reduce Maldives to 57 for 5 in the 12th over. In spite of the run rate climbing and wickets continuing to fall, number nine batter Hassan Ibrahim was not about to give up as he drove Thinley Jamtsho between extra cover and mid off to reduce the equation to 21 off 17. Jamtsho, however, would only concede another run in his next five deliveries, which meant that Maldives needed 20 runs off 12 balls for the win. Bowling the penultimate over, skipper Singye dismissed Ibrahim, who was caught by Sonam Yeshi, leaving Maldives with 18 required off 9 balls. Singye and Jamtsho then held their nerves, closing out the innings without conceding any further boundaries to clinch a historic and memorable first T20I win for Bhutan. Namgay Thinley was awarded the player-of-the-match award for his crucial three-wicket haul.
