CRICKET AT THE 32ND SEA GAMES, CAMBODIA 2023 |

The Malaysian Cricket Association is elated to see the inclusion of cricket in the 32nd SEA Games that will be held in Cambodia in 2023. The games are scheduled to be held from 5 May to 16 May 2023 in Phnom Penh. Malaysian Cricket acknowledges that this inclusion would not have been a reality if not for the dedication and commitment of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, The Asian Cricket Council, and the Cricket Federation of Cambodia. In expressing his gratitude, Mohammed Iqbal Ali Kassim Ali, President of the Malaysian Cricket Association said “I know the level of hard work and commitment that went in to bring cricket to the SEA Games and I feel obliged to extend gratitude on behalf of the players and the Association. Our gratitude goes foremost to the Olympic Council of Malaysia, the Asian Cricket Council and the Cricket Federation of Cambodia for seeing cricket as a worthy inclusion in the SEA games.” Mr. Iqbal added - “We must give due recognition to MCA’s former president, Mr. Mahinda Vallipuram, for his commitment and ground work toward vying for this to become a reality for all cricket playing nations in Asia”. In the 2017 SEA Games, Malaysia fared well when the men’s team bagged gold in the 50 Overs format and silver in the T20 format. The Women’s team earned a bronze in the T20 format. This year both the men and women’s teams have been creating waves with marked improvement in their performance. The men’s team won the Stan Nagiah tournament in Singapore and at the just concluded Quadrangular Series, Malaysia was unbeaten and emerged Champions. During this series, two Malaysian players achieved milestones with 1000 T20 International Runs. The women’s team have been holding their own as well. At the ACC Women’s T20 Championship, in June this year, ten nations competed for two available at the Asia Cup. Malaysia etched out eight nations to qualify by merit for the Asia Cup scheduled for October 2022. This was historic, as it is the first time Malaysia has qualified for the Asia Cup. The women’s team went on to win the Saudari Cup 2022 in Singapore earlier this month. With the recent wave of good performances, the men’s team have moved up to 27 in the ICC T20i ranking from the previous ranking of 31 while the women have climbed to 29 in the ICC T20i ranking from their previous ranking of 33. Given the remarkable scale of improvement and the hard work that goes in toward developing cricketers, it is the ardent hope of Malaysian Cricket for the Ministry of Sports to come on board and lend us support. This will no doubt, aid us in ensuring the sustainability of cricket in Malaysia while giving many young people a sense of purpose and direction. Malaysian Cricket remains steadfast toward developing ethnic talents and the 2023 SEA Games will see a hundred percent ethnic Squad. |
