Malaysia vs Vanuatu: Syed Aziz five-for not enough as Allan heroics lead Vanuatu to two-wicket win Jarryd Allan’s 39* (41) led Vanuatu to a tense win after Nalin Nipiko’s 3-42 helped them bowl Malaysia out for 124 in the first innings. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Malaysia lost opener Vijay Unni in the first over after he was run out by Ronald Tari. Nalin Nipiko then trapped Ahmad Faiz in front for 1 in the fourth over after the Malaysian captain decided against playing a shot to a ball that moved into him. Syed Aziz walked in at number four, playing a cover drive and a flick off his legs for two elegant boundaries that got him into double figures. Soon after, however, he edged Nipiko to Joshua Rasu in the slip cordon to leave Malaysia reeling at 32 for 3 in the tenth over. Nipiko wasn’t done yet. He tempted Syahadat Ramly into a drive, which the right-hander could only edge behind to keeper Jarryd Allan. After a brief period of consolidation, Sharvin Muniandy tried to punch leg-spinner Williamsing Nalisa off the back foot, only managing to edge through to Allan. Still at the crease, opener Virandeep Singh cut Joshua Rasu behind square for four. Soon after, however, he was struck on the pad when he rocked onto the back foot and attempted attempt to whip Nalisa away through the leg side. The umpire had no choice but to raise his finger to leave Malaysia in tatters at 58 for 6 in the 20th over. Joshnua Rasu then chipped in with the wickets of Ainool Hafizs and Anwar Rahman to restrict Malaysia to 64 for 8 after 23 overs. At this stage, it seemed as if Vanuatu would bowl Malaysia out for less than a hundred. Luckily for Malaysia, the experienced Khizar Hayat led a counter attack, which included a six over the leg side off Rasu’s bowling. Either side of this, a pair of misfields off Nalisa’s bowling allowed both Hayat and Wafiq Irfan to collect a boundary each. In search of a wicket, Vanuatu turned to opening bowler Apolinaire Stephen. The seamer didn’t disappoint, dismissing Irfan who was caught by Junior Kaltapau on the off side to leave Malaysia 102 for 9. A pair of boundaries from Hayat allowed him to stitch together a small partnership with Pavandeep Singh before the number eleven was run out in an attempt to sneak a single that would have allowed Hayat to retain strike for the next over. Malaysia’s innings folded for 124 with one delivery left in the 38th over. Chasing 125 for victory, Vanuatu got off to a lightning quick start. Joshua Rasu drove left-arm spinner Pavandeep Singh for two fours, either side of which Nalin Nipiko punished short deliveries from Wafiq Irfan to the square boundaries on both the off side and leg side. Irfan, though, would get his revenge after Nipiko attempted a lofted shot, which he missed to get bowled. Syed Aziz was then introduced into the attack, dismissing Rasu with an outswinger that took the outside edge and was caught by keeper Ainool Hafizs. Walking in at number four, Andrew Mansale didn’t last long as he was dismissed in near-identical fashion to give Syed Aziz his second wicket. Syed Aziz would soon make that three after he bowled Bettan Viraliuliu for 3. In his very next over, the Malaysian seamer dismissed Junior Kaltapau for 22 (42) to leave Vanuatu struggling at 67 for 5 in the 18th over. Ronald Tari then missed a straight one from Anwar Rahman to give the left-arm spinner his first wicket. At the fall of Tari’s wicket, Vaunatu needed 57 more runs for victory with a mere four wickets in hand. In spite of being in a precarious position, Allan held strong, pulling both Syed Aziz and Sharvin Muniandy away for boundaries when they erred on the shorter side. Williamsing Nalisa was providing capable support from the other end until he chipped an Anwar Rahman delivery straight back to the bowler. With the game swinging back in favour of Vanuatu, Syed Aziz was reintroduced into the attack and dismissed Nalisa, who was caught by Khizar Hayat. With Vanuatu still needing 21 runs to win with just two wickets in hand, Allan decided to grab the bull by its horns. He charged down the track to lift Rahman over the ropes on the off side. The equation shrunk even further in the next over when Allan pulled Syed Aziz away for four yet again. Malaysia could not find a way to break the ninth wicket partnership as Rival Samson and Allan knocked off the remaining runs in singles to deliver a win for Vanuatu in the 33rd over. Brief Scores: Vanuatu 125/8 in 32.3 Overs (Allan 39*, Kaltapau 22, Syed Aziz 5-36) beat Malaysia 124 All Out in 37.5 Overs (Hayat 42*, Virandeep 28, Nipiko 3-42) by 2 wickets with 17.3 overs to spare |
