Damgaard's 6-6 helps Denmark defend 242 against Malaysia

Left-arm spinner Nicolaj Damgaard took 6 for 6 in a nine-over spell, which included seven maidens, to help bowl Malaysia out for 151 after Denmark scored 242 for 6 in a rain-reduced 49-over contest.

After winning the toss and bowling first, Malaysia put the early squeeze on Denmark’s batting line-up. One delivery after being hit for four by Damgaard, who was opening the batting, Pavandeep Singh lured the powerful Danish all-rounder out of his crease, getting him stumped by Ainool Hafizs.

Pavandeep and Wafiq Irfan then combined to restrict the run-scoring until Hamid Shah lofted Pavandeep over the leg side for six to breath momentum back into Denmark’s innings.

One delivery after Shah and Zameer Khan’s partnership reached fifty, the latter was stumped when he dragged his foot out of the crease while playing a defensive stroke to an Anwar Rahman delivery, leaving Denmark at 60 for 2 in the 17th over.

Walking in at number four, Saif Ahmad wasted no time in stamping his authority on the game, sweeping Rahman away for four before lofting him over his head for six off the very next delivery. In spite of this, Malaysia’s spinners managed to drag Denmark’s run rate under four runs an over.

At 132 for 2 after 34 overs, the Danes had the luxury of wickets in hand with 15 overs left in the innings. Saif Ahmad delivered yet again, sweeping Syahadat Ramli for four before reverse sweeping him to the boundary off the next delivery.

Wafiq Irfan was brought in to close things out but was cut away for four by Shah before Ahmad clipped him off his pads for another boundary. Malaysia dragged one back when Hamid Shah (75) was caught on the boundary by Sharvin Muniandy off the bowling of Amir Azim.

However, this only managed to bring the dangerous Surya Anand to the crease, who ruined Amir Azim’s figures by driving him down the ground for six before pulling him into deep mid wicket for four. Despite losing a few late wickets, Denmark had done the damage, reaching 242 for 6 at the end of their allotted 49 overs as Saif Ahmad finished unbeaten on 92.

Chasing 243 for victory, Malaysia lost openers Syed Aziz and Saifullah Malik early. The former swept Damgaard straight to Anand before Malik was caught behind by Abdul Hashmi to leave Malaysia reeling at 16 for 2 in the sixth over.

Virandeep Singh joined Ahmad Faiz at the crease with both batters collecting an early boundary in their respective innings. After the pair stabilized their team’s innings, Virandeep laid into Shangeev Thanikaithasan, striking him for four boundaries in the space of two overs, which included a pull shot and a sweep shot to the fence. Not to be left behind, Faiz punched Saad Munir for four through the off side to propel Malaysia to 63 for 2 after 15 overs.

A disciplined Denmark came back strong, conceding a mere 25 runs in the next 12 overs before Malaysia once again put their foot on the accelerator to reach 122 after 33 overs.

Despite being hit for a few boundaries, Danish skipper Shah persisted with his off-spin. In what proved to be the turning point of the contest, he dismissed Faiz for 57 after the Malaysian batter was caught by Musa Shaheen Mahmood.

Two overs later, Virandeep Singh (52) was caught behind off the bowling of Damgaard before the bowler had Syahadat Ramli caught by Zameer Khan a mere three deliveries later to reduce Malaysia to 133 for 5 in the 36th over.

Things would go from bad to worse for Malaysia. In the next over, Saif Ahmad bowled Sharvin Muniandy before trapping Ainool Hafizs in front for a first ball duck.

Damgaard then polished off the tail, trapping both Anwar Rahman and Pavandeep Singh in front of the stumps to bowl Malaysia out for 151 and deliver a 91-run win for the Danes.

Brief Scores:

Denmark 242 for 6 in 49 overs (Saif Ahmad 92*, Hamid Shah 75, Anwar Rahman 3-46) beat Malaysia 151 All out in 40 overs (Ahmad Faiz 57, Virandeep Singh 52, Damgaard 6-6) by 91 runs
