Spinners, Sidra Amin star in Pakistan's emphatic nine-wicket win over Malaysia

Spinners, Sidra Amin star in Pakistan's emphatic nine-wicket win over Malaysia

A collective bowling effort from Pakistani spinners, led by Omaima Sohail’s 3-19, restricted Malaysia to 57-9 before Sidra Amin’s strokeful 31 ensured a nine-wicket win on the second day of the Women’s Asia Cup in Sylhet.

Having won the toss on a slow pitch, Pakistan skipper Bismah Maroof inserted Malaysia to bat and her decision was immediately vindicated as Diana Baig accounted for the Malaysian captain Winifred Duraisingam, caught off just the second ball of the game. Mas Elysa followed suit in the next over for three.

Malaysia could neither score nor protect wickets as they were reduced to 26-4 at the halfway stage of the innings. 17-year-old Elsa Hunter held fort with an unbeaten 29 off 51 deliveries as she crunched all of the three boundaries of her side’s innings.

Off-spinner Omaima Sohail produced an eventful 14th over when she effected a run-out and scalped identical wickets - Nurilya Natasya and Sasha Azmi were bowled through the gate - after Hunter drove through the cover for back-to-back boundaries.

Malaysia lost four wickets for three runs and could not recover from the collapse to post an underpar 57-9.

In response, Pakistan’s openers raced off the blocks as Muneeba Ali Siddiqui and Sidra Amin struck seven boundaries between them. Malaysian spinners bowled too short too often and to make matters worse, found little help from the fielders inside the ring.

Siddiqui eventually knocked off the target with 66 balls to spare with a boundary swept through square leg to ensure no more hiccups after losing Amin, bowled off the final delivery of the powerplay.

Brief scores: Pakistan 61/1 in 9 overs (Amin 31, Ismail 1-8) beat Malaysia 57/9 in 20 overs (Hunter 29*, Sohail 3-19) by 9 wickets
