Theertha Satish’s measured 62* guided UAE over the line against a spirited Malaysian outfit at the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Malaysian captain Winifred Duraisingam led from the front. She was the dominant partner in a 40-run stand with fellow opener Wan Julia. By the time Wan Julia was dismissed in the eighth over, Malaysia were scoring at a shade above five runs an over as Mas Elysa walked to the crease to join her skipper. While the duo was able to rotate the strike, they were tied down by off spinner Esha Oza and leg-spinner Vaishnave Mahesh in the middle phase of the innings. Knowing that she needed to step on the gas, Elysa decided to go after Indhuja Nandakumar, but only managed to a sky a catch up to Mahika Gaur. In the next over, Duraisingam was bowled by Mahesh for 33 (53) to leave Malaysia at 75 for 3 with three overs left. Soon after hitting a boundary, Elsa Hunter would join her teammates back in the dugout after she was caught by Esha Oza off the bowling of UAE skipper Chaya Mughal. Malaysia continued to struggle before Ainna Hamizah hit a four off the final ball of the innings to nudge Malaysia to a total of 88 for 4 in their 20 overs. In the second innings, Malaysian off-spinner Sasha Azmi further solidified her reputation as Malaysia’s premier powerplay bowler by trapping Esha Oza in front in the third over. She then ran out Khushi Sharma to leave UAE in a spot of bother at 18 for 2 in the fifth over. By the time she’d finished her four-over spell, Azmi had bowled 18 dot balls and conceded just seven runs. Even after rebuilding their innings, the UAE found it hard to score boundaries as left-arm spinner Arianna Natasya and Aisya Eleesa backed up the good work done by Azmi. At 64 for 2 after 15 overs, and with the UAE still requiring 25 runs for victory, Malaysia was still in the game. However, Satish had other ideas. She hit Duraisingam for four before repeating the dose against Mahirah Izzati. Izzati hit back, conceding just three runs in the penultimate over to drag the chase into the final six balls with the UAE still requiring two runs for victory. Yet, Satish was in no mood for drama. She dispatched Ainna Hamizah for four off the first ball of the 20th to hand the UAE a hard-fought seven-wicket win.
