Malaysia and Canada triumph on Low-Scoring Day

Malaysia’s bowlers triggered a dramatic collapse before a nerveless 41 from Sharvin Muniandy led the hosts to victory over Denmark at the Bayuemas Oval on the second day of Round 3 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League Group A.

Meanwhile, at the UKM-YSD Cricket Oval, on the back of Kaleem Sana’s 5 for 27, Canada defeated a spirited Qatar by 4 wickets, casing 147 inside 31 overs.

Malaysia vs. Denmark

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first in a rain-reduced 36-over contest, Nicolaj Laegsgaard struck two early boundaries before being caught by Sharvin Munaindy off the bowling of Pavandeep Singh.

Taranjit Bharaj then walked in to partner Hamid Shah and the two continued to score freely for the rest of the powerplay. Even after losing Shah in the 13th over of the innings, Bharaj batted on with Saif Ahmad to propel Denmark to 119 in the 24th over of the innings.

However, this is when Khizar Hayat decided to turn the tables. The Malaysian off-spinner bowled Ahmad before taking a return catch to dismiss Musa Shaheen. Surya Anand would also have his timber disturbed by the wily finger spinner as Denmark were reduced to 129 for 6 at the end of 28 overs.

Denmark never recovered as left-armer Rizwan Haider returned to the crease to take the final two wickets and bowl the Danes out for 159.

With Malaysia needing 160 for victory, Laegsgaard trapped Ahmad Zubaidi plumb in front for a duck in the first over. Left-handers Amir Azim and Syed Aziz steadied the ship with a boundary-laden partnership of 44, which was broken when Oliver Hald had Azim caught behind by Abdul Hashmi.

Even as wickets continued to fall from the other end, Syed Aziz held strong, stroking 47 off 70 balls. Yet, after Saif Ahmad bowled him with the score on 113, Malaysia still required 47 runs off 40 deliveries.

Sharvin Muniandy, however, had nerves of steel. The all-rounder lived up to his reputation as a finisher, launching three maximums toward the closing stages of the innings.

In spite of losing Muniandy, Khizar Hayat, and Pavandeep Singh in quick succession, Malaysia was able to chase down its target with three balls to spare.

Brief Scores:

Malaysia 160/8 in 35.3 Overs (Syed Aziz 47, Muniandy 41, Laegsgaard 2-33) beat Denmark 159 ALL OUT in 34.4 overs (Bharaj 45, Khizar Hayat 3-27, Haider 3-26) by 2 wickets with 3 balls to spare

Canada vs. Qatar

After being put into bat by Canada, Qatar got off to a disastrous start. Kamran Khan edged a back of a length delivery from Jeremy Gordon to Srimantha Wijeyeratne behind the wickets. With the pressure of dot balls piling up, Imal Liyanage was run out when he was sent back after attempting a suicidal single.

Soon after hitting his first and only boundary of the innings, Zaheer Ibrahim holed out to Nicholas Kirton at mid on to give Kaleem Sana his first of five wickets and leave Qatar reeling at 8 for 3 in the fifth over.

Sensing the need to rest his quick bowlers, Canadian captain and left-arm spinner Saad bin Zafar introduced himself into the attack. He struck almost immediately, trapping Akash Babu plumb in front as he played back to one he should have been forward to.

Off-spinner Nikhil Dutta would soon get into the act, trapping Assad Borham plumb in front to leave Qatar reeling at 41 for 7 in the 22nd over.

Gayan Munaweera then joined Ikramullah Khan at the crease as the two struggled to score for the first few overs of their partnership. Khan, however, decided he’d had enough. In an innings of 53 (86), he thumped a maximum down the ground before slog sweeping another into cow corner

Not to be left behind, Munaweera slashed a boundary away over point before being caught behind off the bowling of Sana to end a 68-run partnership for the 8th wicket.

Mohammed Nadeem suffered a similar fate to hand Sana his fifth wicket and end Qatar’s innings on 146 after 49.2 overs.

In response, Canada lost the dangerous Aaron Johnson in the very first over of their chase after he was run out attempting a third run that wasn’t there for the taking. Ikramullah and Munaweera then ran amok, reducing Canada to 35 for 4 after 6 overs.

Nikhil Dutta was promoted up the order and stitched together a 52-run stand with the dominant Nicholas Kirton who was proficient on all sides of the wicket, favouring the cover boundary.

Just as it looked like Canada were close to getting over the line, Dutta was caught behind off the bowling off Akash Babu before Ravinderpal Singh spooned a return catch up to Mohammad Nadeem.

With 34 runs still required, skipper Saad bin Zafar walked in at number eight and assumed the mantle of aggressor. He scored an unbeaten 21 to guide his team home, as Kirton finished not out on 65.

Brief Scores

Canada 147/6 in 30.1 Overs (Kirton 65*, Munaweera 2-30) beat Qatar 146 ALL OUT in 49.2 Overs (Ikramullah 53, Sana 5-27) by 4 wickets with 119 balls to spare
