Malaysia Win Again as Canada Seal Playoff Berth

Day three of the third leg of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League Group A saw a fluent 83 from Pragat Singh power Canada to a 187-run win over Singapore and propel them into the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

Meanwhile, at the UKM-YSD Oval, Malaysia defeated Vanuatu by five wickets courtesy a captain’s knock of 75* by Ahmad Faiz.

Canada vs Singapore

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Canada’s openers did not take long to stamp their authority on the game. Aaron Johnson kickstarted his innings with a six lofted over extra cover before he cleared the ropes on two more occasions during a powerplay that saw Canada accumulate 81 runs without the loss of a wicket.

Akshar Puri and Janak Prakash then dragged things back for Singapore, trapping Johnson and Srimantha Wijeyeratne, respectively, plumb in front. After Nicholas Kirton hit Puri into the hands of Janak Prakash, Canada found themselves 121 for 3 in 19 overs. With Harsh Thaker still finding his crease, Pragat Singh stepped into overdrive, clipping Aryaman Uchil off his pads for six.

Puri, however, would continue to shine dismissing Pragat Singh in the 31st over before trapping Ravinderpal Singh for a duck just three balls later. When Puri bowled Saad bin Zafar around his legs, Canada was suddenly faced with the possibility of being bowled out cheaply.

Yet, a quick fire 53* off 42 for Nikhil Dutta eventually raised Canada’s total up to 294 for 9 at the end of their 50-over allotment.

Even after a lightning quick start from Avi Dixit and Aritra Dutta that saw them muscle 29 runs in the first three overs, Singapore were always facing an uphill task.

Kaleem Sana picked up where he left off against Qatar, bowling Dixit with a full delivery before getting Dutta caught by a well-directed bouncer. Singapore never recovered from this pair of blows as Canadian skipper Saad bin Zafar introduced himself into the attack and cleaned up the lower order.

Singapore, in just the 29th over, was bowled out for 107, giving Canada an unassailable lead in Challenge League Group A.

Brief Scores

Canada 294/9 (Pragat Singh 83, Johnson 60, Puri 5-32) beat Singapore 107 ALL OUT in 28.2 Overs (Dutta 22, Bin Zafar 5-18) by 187 runs

Player of the match: Pragat Singh

Malaysia vs Vanuatu

After winning the toss and choosing to field first, Malaysia immediately struck gold. Nalin Nipiko was caught behind off the bowling of Syazrul Idrus for a duck off just the second ball of the day.

After briefly stabilizing the innings and soon after launching a maximum, Jarryd Allan was dismissed for 22 when he was bowled by left-armer Rizwan Haider. Shortly after, Patrick Matautaava and Ronald Tari followed him into the dugout with the latter being caught behind off the bowling of Khizar Hayat.

However, Junior Kaltapau and Joshua Rasu steadied the ship, putting on 90 runs for the fifth wicket. In desperate need of a breakthrough, Ahmad Faiz turned to Sharvin Muniandy. It proved to be a wise decision as the seam bowling all-rounder dismissed Kaltapau, who was caught by a jubilant Syed Aziz.

Syed Aziz would then get into the wickets with his new brand of mystery spin as Muniandy returned the favour to take a catch that dismissed Joshua Rasu for 38. At 149 for 6 in the 41st over, Vanuatu needed a partnership as well as quick runs.

Neither of those things materialized as they limped to 188 for 9 at the end of 50 overs.

In reply, Malaysia lost Ahamd Zubaidi for a golden duck before a series of boundaries and a generous serving of extras allowed them to race off the blocks. Nipiko then dismissed Syed Aziz, who was caught by Williamsing Nalisa. Amir Azim was next to go, edging Matautaava behind for 22 before Syed Rehmatullah suffered the same fate of Joshua Rasu’s bowling.

At 59 for 4 in the 11th over, Malaysia needed a partnership. Fortunately for the hosts, Khizar Hayat and Ahmad Faiz stitched together a fluent partnership of 71, which featured boundaries and the regular rotation of strike.

Hayat’s dismissal with the score on 130 gave Vanuatu hope of pulling off a victory.

Yet, Ahmad Faiz was determined to see his team home, which he did with the help of an unbeaten 25 from Muniandy.

Brief Scores:

Malaysia 192/5 in 38.2 overs (Faiz 75, Matautaava 2-11) beat Vanuatu 188/9 (Kaltapau 64, Muniandy 4-38) by 5 wickets with 70 balls to spare
Player of the match: Ahmad Faiz
