On the fifth day of Round 3 at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League Group A, Kaleem Sana’s 4-fer and Mohammad Nadeem’s 5-fer delivered convincing victories for Canada and Qatar, respectively. Canada vs. Denmark After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Canada’s opening bowlers were frustrated by openers Nicolaj Damgaard and Hamid Shah. In spite of losing Shah in the seventh over, Damgaard switched gears, clipping Jeremy Gordon off his legs for six before charging down the ground to loft Harsh Thaker over the long off boundary on two separate occasions. However, when he tried to repeat the dose against Pragat Singh, he holed out to Srimantha Wijeyeratne leaving Denmark at 76 for 3 in the 18th over. Saif Ahmad then pulled a six over square leg before gifting an easy caught and bowled to Singh. Shangeev Thanikaithasan walked to the crease and built a 64-run partnership with Zameer Khan. Yet, after off-spinner Nikhil Dutta trapped the former in front for 41 in the 38th over, it precipitated a collapse that saw the Danes lose their last six wickets for the addition of just ten runs. Kaleem Sana returned to take three of those six wickets, which included a searing yorker to bowl Surya Anand. After persistent rain delayed the start of the second innings, Canada walked out needing 127 in 30 overs. Aaron Johnson clipped the first ball of the innings from Oliver Hald to square leg for four. Hald struck back off the very next ball, bowling Johnson with one that shaped back into the right-hander. Pragat Singh was next to go when he missed a hooping inswinger to get trapped in front. At 5 for 2 in the third over, Denmark’s fielders were fired up. Yet, this flame was soon extinguished by Wijeyeratne, who took on the role of aggressor in a partnership with Harsh Thaker. Wijeyeratne scored his first boundary by charging down the track to loft Hald over his head for four. When he did the same to Surya Anand later in the innings, the ball travelled over the rope for a maximum. Not to be tied down by spin, the Canadian number three heaved Damgaard over long off for six. By the time he was dismissed in the 24th over, Canada had reached 119 for 3 as Ravinderpal Singh and Thaker knocked off the remaining runs with more than four overs to spare. The left-arm quick had Kamran Khan caught behind by Syed Rehmatullah to leave Qatar at 7 for 1 in the third over. Imal Liyanage and Akash Babu then paired up to find regular boundaries in a whirlwind partnership of 116 in 18.5 overs. In spite of proving expensive at first, Sharvin Muninandy hit back with the wickets of Liyanage and Akash Babu as Qatar found themselves in a spot of bother at 131 for 4 in the 26th over. Malaysia’s spinners turned the screws as the pressure of a decreasing run rate began to tell on the shoulders of Qatar’s batters. However, Muhammad Ikramullah’s brisk 24 off 10 combined with Muhammad Tanveer’s composed 62 propelled Qatar to a competitive 235 for 8. Needing 236 for victory at 4.72 runs per over, Ahmad Zubaidi was dismissed early, nicking Gayan Munaweera to Assad Borham in the slips. When Vijay Unni pulled Ikramullah straight into the hands of square leg, Malaysia found themselves at 30 for 3 in the 11th over. Skipper Ahmad Faiz then walked to the crease and combined with Amir Azim to stitch together a 46-run stand. However, after Mohammed Nadeem had him caught behind by Imal Liyanage for the first of his five wickets, Malaysia struggled to recover. With the exception of opener Amir Azim, who top-scored with 57, Malaysia never threatened Qatar’s target, eventually folding for 114 inside 34 overs.
