Day three of the Malaysia Quadrangular T20 Series 2022 saw the home side extend their unbeaten streak with a 120-run over Singapore. Their commanding win was powered by knocks of 71 and 59* from Virandeep Singh and Syed Aziz, respectively. In the morning game, Bahraini skipper Sarfraz Ali broke the back of Qatar’s chase with 4-12 to restrict them to 151 for 9 in pursuit of 165. Qatar vs. Bahrain After being put into bat, Bahrain scored regular boundaries in the opening exchanges of the contest. Unfortunately for them, they also lost their openers in the first three overs with Sarfraz Ali being trapped in front by Ikramullah before Prashant Kurup was bounced out by Gayan Buddika. As Qatar’s spinners applied the squeeze and the run rate slowed down, both Syed Yousuf Tameem and Imran Javed were dismissed after mistiming lofted shots to leave Bahrain at 70 for 4 in the tenth over. Soon after, Mohammad Tanveer trapped Ahmer Bin Nasir in front to swing the momentum in favour of Qatar. Enter Junaid Aziz. The Bahraini number seven’s 52 (29) included seven fours, a six that sailed over deep cover, and another big hit over the straight boundary. His half-century ensured that Bahrain finished on a slightly above par 164 for 9. Qatar’s innings got off to an eventful start. After striking the first ball of the chase for four, Kamran Khan slashed a maximum over deep backward point before perishing off the very next delivery when he tried to repeat the shot. Just as it looked like in-form Imal Liyanage was building a big innings, he was dismissed by Waseeq Ahmed, who had him caught by Haider Ali. Waseeq would take another two wickets, including that of Qatar skipper Mohammad Rizlan who lofted a tame drive straight into the hands of long off, to leave Bahrain reeling at 58 for 5 in the tenth over. In spite of wickets falling all around him, Mohammad Tanveer took a liking to the usually economical Muhammad Rizwan, lofting him over long on twice before slogging him over deep mid wicket. Sarfraz Ali, however, picked up four quick wickets, which included a searing yorker to bowl Akash Babu out for a duck. With 27 required off the last over, Tanveer lifted Rizwan over long on twice more to reduce the equation to 15 off 3. Yet, the fairy tale was not to be as Tanveer finished unbeaten on 88 of 46 with Qatar posting 151 for 9 at the end of 20. Once again, openers Ahmad Zubaidi and Virandeep Singh brought up a fifty-run partnership within the powerplay itself. Virandeep kick-started his innings with an elegant dab down to third man before flaying a pair of boundaries through the covers. Even after losing Zubaidi, he did not slow down. By the time he chipped Singapore skipper Janak Prakash to Surendran Chandramohan at long on, the damage had been done as Malaysia stood strong at 118 for 2 in the 14th over. This set a platform for Syed Aziz to muscle an unbeaten 59 (23), which included a final over assault on Prakash. He charged down the track to hammer the Singapore skipper over long off for a flat six before dispatching the final ball of the innings over deep square leg to propel Malaysia to 207 for 3. Singapore’s chase never got off the ground. As he so often does, left-armer Rizwan Haider picked up an early scalp, getting Amartya Kaul to nick behind to a diving Syed Aziz. Syed Aziz would have his second catch when he caught Aman Desai off the bowling of Sharvin Muniandy. Sharvin was not done yet. He continued to bend his back to extract bounce from the UKM Cricket Oval surface. Aryaman Uchil tried to cut him away, only to get a top edge that flew into the hands of Ahmad Zubaidi at deep third man. Fitri Sham then struck gold, cramping Janak Prakash for room to get him bowled. After Khizar Hayat trapped Abdul Rehman Bhadelia plumb in front, Singapore found themselves at 61 for 8. Having run out of specialist batters, they eventually folded for 87 with one ball left in the 19th over.
