Virandeep Singh’s dominant 96 off 54 helped Malaysia chase down a target of 180 against Bahrain. Earlier on day four of the Malaysia Quadrangular T20 Series 2022, Qatar skipper Mohammad Rizlan muscled seven maximums in an innings of 56 to help his side chase 141 against Singapore with five overs to spare. Qatar vs Singapore After being put into bat, Singapore lost Avi Dixit early after he fended at a delivery from Gayan Buddika to offer Assad Borham an easy catch at backward point. In spite of losing Aman Desai in the next over, Surendran Chandramohan was in no mood to slow down, launching Ikramullah for consecutive maximums over the off side boundary. Ikramullhah, however, struck back, bowling Chandramohan with one that angled in sharply from around the wicket. Manpreet Singh played a fighting knock, punishing Qatar’s spinners when they bowled short or gave him too much width as he favoured the cut shot. When he was dismissed for 53, Singapore found themselves at 105 for 5 in the 16th over, needing a final flourish to push onto a competitive total. In spite of Janak Prakash striking a maximum early in his innings, Qatar’s bowlers held their nerve as they restricted Singapore to 140 for 6 at the end of 20 overs. Qatar was never in trouble during their run chase as Singapore could neither keep the runs down nor take regular wickets. At 85 for 1 after ten overs, the game was virtually done and dusted. To rub salt into Singapore’s wounds, Mohammad Rizlan struck Akshay Puri for three consecutive maximums, which included a massive hit over long on. After he skied a catch up to Janak Prakash, Imal Liyanage assumed the mantle of aggressor. The left-hander hit the winning runs when he charged down the track to Vinoth Bhaskaran and lifted him over deep mid wicket to close out the chase with five overs left. Left-arm spinner Fitri Sham struck twice in the second over, trapping Prashant Kurup in front before bowling Imran Javed with a quick arm ball that surprised the in-form batter. After playing himself in, Bahrain skipper Sarfraz Ali decided to throw caution to the wind, launching Fitri Sham into the car park for six. Yet, as he so often does, Sharvin Muniandy came into the attack and broke the partnership, dismissing Ali with the score on 47 for 3 after 8 overs. Bahrain would double their score in the next six overs before Rizwan Haider bowled Sohail Ahmed from around the wicket for 38 (30). This, however, brought the dangerous Ahmer Bin Nasir to the crease. In a blistering knock of 44 (19), he targeted the leg side, launching four maximums as he nearly swung himself off his feet on a few occasions. Even after he was dismissed with the score on 157 for 5 with one over left, there was no respite for Malaysia. Haider Ali smashed Syed Aziz for three sixes in the 22-run final over, including a slog sweep off the last ball that sailed well over the head of the deep mid wicket fielder. Chasing 180 for victory, Malaysia scored 12 off the first over as Ahmad Zubaidi pulled Muhammad Rizwan for four in front of square before Virandeep Singh guided a delivery past third man for his first boundary. Virandeep continued to find regular boundaries and score all around the wicket. He pulled Waseeq Ahmed to deep mid wicket before charging down the track to smash Imran Javed into the cover fence. Javed would come in for more punishment as Zubaidi flat batted him over the deep cover boundary for six. With 74 coming off the powerplay, Bahrain would have hoped to drag things back after spreading out the field. Yet, Virandeep had other ideas. He unleashed a procession of slog sweeps, which sailed into cow corner as Zubaidi continued scythe away deliveries that were wide of off stump. By the time Zubaidi was bowled by a full delivery from Sarfraz Ali, the score had reached 156 for 1 in the 14th over. Virandeep would fall agonizingly short of his century after he mishit Rizwan to Shahid Mahmood at long on. With two runs needed for victory, Jamaludeen Ariff swiped a four into the leg side to get Malaysia over the line with a comfortable 13 balls to spare.
