Bahrain Qualify after Washout; Malaysia Thrash Singapore by 143 |

The penultimate day of action at the Malaysia Quadrangular T20 Series 2022 saw Malaysia hand Singapore a 143-run drubbing before a washout allowed Bahrain to join Malaysia in Friday’s final at the expense of Qatar. Malaysia vs. Singapore After they won the toss and batted first, Malaysia saw their opening partnership broken early for the first time in the tournament. Right-arm seamer Neil Karnik picked up his maiden T20I wicket when Ahmad Zubaidi mistimed a lofted drive to Vinoth Baskaran at mid on. After a quiet period for the home side, Virandeep Singh settled into his innings by stroking Janak Prakash through the covers for four before lofting him over deep cover for six. At 53 for 1 at the conclusion of the powerplay, Baskaran would give Singapore hope of dragging back their opponents when he dismissed Virandeep, who was caught at long on by Aryaman Uchil. This, arguably, turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Malaysia. Syed Aziz walked to the crease, slog sweeping Baskaran over the ropes before smashing Vihaan Hampihallikar for four sixes in an over. Not to be left behind, Ahmad Faiz slapped a delivery over mid off before peppering the straight and leg side boundaries en route to a player-of-the-match 86 off 50. Even after Syed Aziz was dismissed for an innings of 55 that included several straight sixes, Malaysia did not slow down. Debutant Aslam Khan walked in and slogged three maximums, finishing on an unbeaten 26 off 18 as Malaysia posted a daunting 223 for 4 in their 20 overs. Singapore’s intent was clear from the very first over of their chase. Amartya Kaul kicked off his innings by pulling Rizwan Haider in front of square for a boundary. Yet, it was Rizwan who would have the last laugh, bowling Kaul from around the wicket. Fitri Sham had a similar comeback story. Soon after being dispatched for four by Aman Desai, the left-arm spinner had him caught by Ahmad Faiz at square leg. In-form Manpreet Singh attempted to resurrect the innings with an attractive 26 off 16, which pushed Singapore’s total to 49 for 2 in the fifth over. However, after he was caught by Ahmad Zubaidi off the bowling of Fitri Sham, it precipitated a collapse that saw Singapore lose their last 8 wickets for 31 runs and get bowled out for 80 in just 16 overs. Qatar won the toss and decided to bowl first, picking up two early wickets, including Prashant Kurup who was trapped in front by Mohammad Nadeem. Imran Javed and Sohail Ahmed then put together a 66-run partnership to rescue the innings before the former was bowled by leg-spinner Valeed Veetil. Soon after, Bahraini skipper Sarfraz Ali was run out by Gayan Buddika before rain blanketed the outfield. Bahrain, as a result of the abandonment, qualified for Friday’s final against Malaysia. |
