Amir Azim Maiden T20I Fifty Powers Malaysia Win

A fluent 80 (52) from left-hander Amir Azim propelled Malaysia to 200 for 6 before their bowlers limited Bahrain to 147 for 9 to win by 53 runs and book a place in the final of the Hong Kong T20I Series.

After being put into bat, Malaysia lost Virandeep Singh in the second over when an Ali Dawood delivery clipped the top of his off stump. Coming in at three, Amir Azim began his innings with a guided boundary behind square on the off side which would turn out to be a marker of things to come as he continued to punish anything marginally short and wide.

Ahmad Zubaidi enjoyed a slice of luck when he miscued Imran Javed over backward point for six either side of a pair of plays and misses. Sathaiya Veerapathiran bowled Zubaidi with a delivery that kept a tad low before Syed Aziz was run out off a strong throw from Haider Ali Butt to leave Malaysia at 88 for 3 in the tenth over.

Unperturbed, skipper Ahmad Faiz hit the ground running with a series of slog sweeps, the second of which was parried over by the deep mid wicket fielder. Even after the dismissal of Faiz, Amir Azim continued on his merry way, clearing deep square leg for one of his three maximums. Rizwan Butt dismissed Azim and Arief Jamaludeen in quick succession before Sharvin Muniandy closed out the innings with a pair of sixes over deep mid wicket and long off, respectively.

In reply, Bahrain lost three wickets inside their first three overs before Sohail Ahmed and Haider Ali Butt stabilized the innings with the former favouring the extra cover fence.

Even after Butt was caught at long off by a leaping Zubaidi off the bowling of Rizwan Haider. Ahmed continued to take the attack to Malaysia, depositing Sharvin Muniandy over extra cover for a flat and ferocious maximum.

Yet, it was Sharvin who would have the last laugh taking a high catch off his own bowling to send Ahmed packing with the score on 119 for 5 in the 15th over.

Bahrain never recovered from this, eventually coming up short by 53 runs.

Brief Scores:

Malaysia 200 for 6 (Amir Azim 80, Faiz 37, Veerapathiran 2-29) beat Bahrain 147 for 9 (Sohal Ahmed 65, Rizwan Haider 4-34) by 53 runs
