Singapore Win Again as Malaysia get off to Victorious Start |

Day 2 of the ACC Men’s Under-16 East Zone Cup saw Muhammad Akram’s all-round brilliance fire Malaysia to a 118-run win before Roshan Ravichandran’s 70 off 58 secured a 104-run win for Singapore. Malaysia vs Thailand After being put into bat, Malaysia enjoyed a dream start as Muhammad Aalif and Muhammad Asyqal put on an opening stand of 81. Aalif started off as the more aggressive of the two, lifting Decaphon Chaisong over deep square leg for the first maximum of the day in just the second over. Asyqal, who went on to assume the mantle of aggressor, struck six fours and a six in his innings of 43. He looked good for a big score, especially after being dropped by Piyawat Nordi in the 12th over. Three balls later, however, Nordi would make amends by taking a catch at deep mid wicket off Phanuwat Desungnoen’s bowling. The Thai skipper would strike twice more in quick succession, bowling Hamzah Panggi before trapping Asyraf Rifaie in front to restrict Malaysia to 108 for four in the 20th over. Eventual player-of-the-match Muhammad Akram struck a fluent 47 off 44 to rebuild the innings and push the score to 179 in the 30th over. Yet, when he was caught by Chaisong off the bowling of Ratthasat Wanitchakham, it precipitated a collapse that saw Malaysia get bowled out for 208 with two balls to spare in the 35th over. Chasing a shade fewer than six runs an over, Thailand’s hopes of an upset win over the hosts were quickly dashed. Akram began a flurry of wickets by bowling Ashirvad Narayan with a ball that swung into the right-hander. He struck again off the next ball, trapping Jet Sada in front with a similar delivery to leave Thailand reeling at 10 for two in the fourth over. Fellow left-armer Hamzah Panggi added to Thailand’s problems by bowling Wanitchakham with one that angled across him before Asyqal took a diving catch to send Nordi back for a first-ball duck. At 40 for seven in the 18th over, Thailand’s innings was going nowhere. Phanuwat Desungnoen tried to change that. He puled off-spinner Hadiff Irfan into mid wicket for four before muscling a length delivery from Fathul Fatri over long on for six. He continued to favour the pull shot, dispatching seamer Haziq Haiqal over square leg for his second maximum. Haiqal, however, would have the last laugh, getting Desungnoen caught behind off the next ball to seal a mammoth win for the hosts. Roshan Ravichandran hit Sahil for four and six in the third over, which went for 16. In spite of losing opening partner Udhbav Yashasvi soon after when he was trapped in front by Made Rama, Ravichandran did not change his approach. He once again struck a four and a six in the ninth over to push the score to 68 for one. By the time he was bowled by Komang Bayu Pernama, he’d raced onto 70 off 58 balls and had given Singapore the platform they needed for a big total. Walking in at four, Riaan Naik followed up his 27* against Maldives with an innings of 44 that included four fours. Made Rama and Erianto took two wickets a piece but cameos from Hariharan (20) and Kabir Belia (25) pushed Singapore up to a daunting 235 for nine. In reply, Indonesia got off to a decent start as Sahil stroked two boundaries early in his innings. Unfortunately for Indonesia, he could not kick on, getting caught by Hariharan off the bowling of Pranav Dhanuka. Erianto and Fabio Yoel dug in for the long haul, putting on 29 runs in 88 balls for the second wicket. Hariharan came into the attack dismissed the duo on the way to figures of 3-14 in five overs. While they were never in with a realistic chance of chasing down a target of 236, Beni Taruk gave the Indonesian dugout something to cheer about with a knock of 30 off 20 balls, which included four maximums. In spite of being bowled by Dhanuka in the 30th over, he gave Indonesia the impetus they needed to end on a respectable total of 131. Daksh Pratap Singh took the final three wickets to close out the innings in the 35th over and give Singapore their second win in as many days.
