Cricket indeed is a most glorious game and has always been a tremendous source of inspiration and satisfaction for me. Cricket has been the lifeblood for me ever since my boyhood days on the East Bank of Demerara and throughout my cricketing career representing my Club, my County, my country, and the West Indies. Along the way I was privileged to have met several wonderful persons and other cricketers alike. After my departure from the Test Cricket arena my love for the game remained and I thus continued playing softball cricket well into my 60s.
It was my greatest pleasure when I was invited by the Cricket West Indies Masters Association in November 2019 at the Broward Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida where I met an amazing group of West Indian cricketers drawn from various countries around the Caribbean. Most of these cricketers I had played with or against during my formative cricketing days and it was refreshing to see these guys still actively engaged in the game in an organized fashion. These guys were all fully motivated and excited to represent the West Indies at the highest level at a World Cup in their age group category. I was extremely overjoyed at being provided with the opportunity to impart some of my experience in South Africa and cricket in general onto these cricketing colleagues and wished them continued success in their future journeys around the world. They are an extremely lucky bunch of guys to be able to extend their cricketing career in the hard ball game at the highest level in an organized and structured manner. In this regard, Kudos to CRICKET WEST INDIES CRICKET ASSOCIATION for picking up this mantle and filling that void that existed in cricket administration. This can only augur well for these diehard cricketers and their families for their continued health and satisfaction well into their supposedly ‘retirement’ age.
