IPL could be played behind closed doors: BCCI

2020-06-12
The Indian Premier League (IPL) could be played behind closed doors as the last option to save this tournament in this year from falling victim to the coronavirus epidemic. In a letter sent to the state associations by BCCI, Sourav Ganguly said the board remained optimistic about IPL 2020 as they were exploring all the possible options to organise it.

Recently a lot of players, both from India and overseas, have shown their keenness on being a part of this year IPL. According to the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, “The BCCI is working on all possible options to ensure that we are able to stage the IPL this year, even if it means playing the tournament in empty stadiums. The fans, franchisees, players, broadcasters, sponsors and all other stakeholders are keenly looking forward to the possibility of IPL being hosted this year."

With the fate of global tournaments like the Asia Cup & Men's T20 World Cup remains undecided this year, the biggest challenge for the BCCI is to find a free window for the IPL. In case the Men's T20 World Cup gets postponed, the BCCI would like to capitalise on that vacant window, subject to permission from the Government of India.
